Who is Pisces?

Dear Soul

Dear Soul, in order to get to know the archetype of Pisces we need to look to which part of the season it falls in, where in the wheel it belongs and importantly what element shapes it.

Astrology looks to the outer world in understanding itself. It looks for patterns that repeat and allows this to create understanding. Once a pattern was formed the astrologers looked to the heavens noting what was happening above to mark time and space; in bookending what was happening above we could see and recognize repeating cycles and when they would return.

Pisces is in the last month of Summer (here in the southern hemisphere) and Winter (northern Hemisphere). Look what is happening in the world around you to gain extra insight. Where I live summer days are shortening and with this the hold of summer is loosened getting ready to end its reign; this coming ending is heralding the change of autumn taking over. I am thinking over in the northern hemisphere that winter is losing its hold and heralding new growth and opportunity as the days increase in length.

The second part is understanding that Pisces is the final sign on the astrological wheel before we start anew with the fiery Aries. The position of the sign tells me it is objective in nature, it has the ability to instigate action and be initiative-taking searching for what it wants, it is also related to its ability to integrate in society.

As we look at the wheel, we see the first four signs are the evolution of the self, the next four are the self and others, the last four are transpersonal where we know life is about more than just me and others it is about humanity at large and our place in the universe.

When we combine all this and the water element, we come to an understanding of what Pisces is.

Mutability

The signs are based on the natural rhythm to a season in the year. Within each season you find it has three distinct parts. A beginning the instigated new change breaking away from the season before and this part is known as Cardinal. The second part is the middle and is the most enduring part of the season known as Fixed. The third part is where a season readies itself to leave embracing both what was before and what comes after; this part of the season is known as Mutable.

In the time of Pisces, the energy that thrives is that of Mutability. Pisces mutability speaks of its nature to both embrace the seasons ending while heralding the next. It speaks of a oneness that returns to the collective consciousness, finding much wisdom and solace, feeling its place in being more and yet it is the time in the womb being readied for birth and a new beginning.

In the time of Pisces, the Yin energy is given inner direction by the position in the season. Regardless of the hemisphere you live in, Southern or Northern, the seasons are beginning to shift from summer to autumn (Southern) or Winter to Spring (Northern) each provides the time for a last hooray as it begins to move unwavering towards the next turning of the wheel. Regardless of the hemisphere, Pisces is the culmination of all that has come before and as the season wanes releasing of the old in time for the new. This mutability is the reigning force over the Pisces season. Mutable has no definitive boundaries and is learning to navigate this. Being mutable adds an element of open-mindedness, indecisiveness, versatility, it cannot be defined and placed in a box as mutability redefines boundaries not wanting to be caged and labeled. Mutability is the ability to ebb and flow being fluid in nature. It is finding the adaptability to move between and an acceptance that times are changing, and it is time to move with it. The season is the chance to recalibrate who you are in the greater scheme knowing that the one effects the many for all life is interlinked.

Having the ability to move and go with the flow is part of who Pisces is and if you want to understand this in real time become observant to the natural world around you as we are currently residing in the time of Pisces (as I write this). For me the days are now shortening in visible strides, summer is gathering its last song together before it gives away to cooler climate. In observation of the season and tangible evidence of mutability I currently watch the trees begin readying for change as their leaves brighten into new hues of gold, rust and red, moving away from the shades of green that ruled before showing so much life and giving respite in the shade from the heat. Watch how nature is moving and becoming flexible and malleable to facilitate this change. This is part of the essence of the season of Pisces.

Transpersonal

A piece of Astrology that I have not consciously factored into the woven nature of the signs before is the very orientation of the sign. The signs are a natural evolution. The first signs of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer are of a Personal nature and are concerned with who I am in this world of ours. The second is Interpersonal and is the exploration of who I am in relation to others and how this directly affects me covering the signs of Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio. The third orientation is Transpersonal and extends who we are beyond the boundaries of self and other and knowing our place in the greater scheme of society, the world at large and even encourages understanding of our place in the universe; the signs that belong here are Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

The portion of the astrological year which is Pisces is Transpersonal. This means its orientation is seeking greater understanding of the collective, the innate oneness in life and ability to see what is done to one has a larger impact on the greater world. When we enter Pisces, we have developed and explored the world, beginning to see the greater picture of what that means to us and society. Pisces is the time that we truly begin the spiritual journey of feeling our interconnectedness in life and connection to the greater dream as we unweave our hold on being a separate being and embracing the oneness of the universe.

Water

There is a fourth piece to knowing Pisces and one that provides focus for all that we have discussed and that is the elemental nature of the sign. There are four. First is Fire and relates the to the spirit and identity of who we are. The second is Earth, the part of us that is practical and is part of the material world. The third is Air and illustrates our mental capacity and how we relate to everything. Then there is the fourth element that gives heart and soul to the other three and it is Water.

Water gives us a consciousness and capacity to feel our impact on others; Water rules the emotions, our soul, the link to our lineage and ancestry. Water represents the subconscious aspects of human nature and is the very consciousness of life. Water tempers us by allowing us to feel. Water is the ability to seek healing and desires to nurture. Pisces is part of the Water Element.

Most can look to water and say unremarkable. A single drop of water might not look impressive, but its very nature allows all these single drops to coalesce together each droplet bringing something of itself adding to the collective whole. Each drop gains in size as it is absorbed into the collective and unity eventually forms a large body of water. All this begins from the single drop of water. We also need to remember that a majority of our body is made up of water.

Water is flexible in nature more so than other elements. Water takes the shape of whatever nestles and holds her. She flows, can become frozen, or evaporated into an ephemeral form that creates clouds. Water is transcendent and is related to our emotional body. What better element then the one from which tears come from. Water encourages empathy, sympathy, compassion, and intuition. Water is in a constant ebb and flow state as its very being is pushed and pulled by the Moons power. Water seeks to understand life through emotions and our very soul.

To know water’s nature once again, I would ask you to look to the natural world. Water sustains us and we do not survive long without it. Look to bodies of water to gain understanding. Look to the beginnings of tributaries that run into rivers and oceans. Waters very nature allows it to sink deep within earth herself creating underwater basins. The very movement of water creates or is destructive or does both at once creating new ways to flow moving away from known paths. She is slow and steady or fast and swift both causing erosion. She breaks through the old to bring the new and yet at the same time is deeply held by the ancient and historical ties she has. Look to the ice core samples we take from the polar ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica that tell us what was happening in a point of time in our history. Stop to think how often a droplet of water has moved through life and in how many forms. It has been a cloud, a river and ocean. It has been many places and carries within it remnants of where it has been. Think of the times that water needs to be purified before we can safely use it and then think of the pristine water that has not been tainted. There is a duality where water is deeply influenced by all around it.

Weaving It Together

When we weave all these parts together (on everything I have written here and previously) we gain an understanding of who and what Pisces is and stands for.

Pisces have a depth of nature whose very soul is connected to life itself. Pisces participate in a search for deeper understanding of their place in not only the world and life but also in the universe. They want to heal and feel but can find all this overwhelming. They are the dream and inspiration for us all to be better humans and show us how to move beyond the ego and back to connection with life itself. They are the search and embracement of spirituality. They push the boundaries not being held back due to their very amorphous nature.

I hope Dear Soul that my letters on Pisces have given you something to think about. Please remember that we all have Pisces somewhere in our own charts. We all seek some type of belonging that is greater than self. It is just that when you have a planet there you feel it more and it is more essential to who you are.

In love and light

Rebecca
